Why the fuck are you working at a job 40+ hours a week that you hate, to buy things you don’t need just to impress the people you don’t even like?
The worst thing I personally would say to justify long hours and a stressful work schedule was “well, the money is good.”
Over the past year, I’ve lived in 5 countries, cycled 2,000km across South East Asia and fell in love. I am the happiest I have ever been in my entire life.
Follow my 6 simple steps and work towards your dream today!
First, think about something that seems impossible. Now, find somebody who has done this before because they exist, I promise. I read an amazing book before I started traveling called “Vagabond” by Rolf Potts and it really taught me how anybody with an independent spirit can travel.
A year before actually traveling, I wrote the word <Thailand> on a piece of paper and I looked at it every, single day until I made my goal a reality. – I still carry this paper with me today.
ACTION #1 – Write down your goal
Alright, so you set your goal but realized you are still working at that shitty job. Here are a few steps to prevent you from cracking like Gretchen Weiners at work.
1- Find satisfaction in your job – Grab anything that gives you any pleasure or fulfillment at your job. ie. Make customers happy, get a bonus payout, hit sales goal or win competitions.
2- Do your job well – When I perform poorly at work, I feel like shit. Period.
3- Use your job as a stepping stone – Constantly remind yourself of that goal you set and just keep swimming like Dori. ie. Watch one of my travel videos, read an eBook like Vagabonding or anything that may hype you up to realize you’ll be better off soon.
4- Quit your job – If your moral compass is spinning and you are losing sleep, this is the part when you say “Fuck it” and quit your job. (Seriously though, don’t quit yet… keep reading)
ACTION #2 – Write down one thing you like about your job
I never realized how much money I would have if I didn’t spend it on an ounce of weed every paycheck, jack daniels, fresh sushi daily or Nike elite sport socks at $20 a pop. I have been sober for nearly 3 years and I am richer in wealth and health because of it.
Did you know a one-way ticket from New York to the Cayman Island is only $96?!
Here are a few key ways to help you save money ASAP.
1 – Food – Eat meals heavy in bananas, rice, dates, beans, frozen fruits and vegetables because they cheapest per calorie staple. If you can, buy in bulk and spend $200 a month on meals.
2 – Water – This should be free 99 if you drink tap, boiled or spring water from a public fountain. Look up the quality of your water if you are nervous about your areas quality of drinkable water.
3 – Shelter – I lived in my car for nearly 5 months paying $229 for rent/ insurance and parked in a Target parking lot. When it got cold I lived in a basement apartment for $600 a month and road my bicycle to work.
Minimum monthly expense: $430 Add + $100 ( socialized dinners, quick snacks like cliff bars and gas) = $530 MAX
ACTION #3 – Save a minimum of $5,000
I’m going to give you two suggestion here that worked for me. One being fast cash and the other being long term cash.
Since May 2016 I started earning money all these platforms:
– $3,600 Intern – ( $600/per) Johnny FD’s Travel Like a Boss – Anthony Podcast Ep 117 & Sam Mark’s Invest Like a Boss
– $475 Up work – ($900/per) Podcast Editing and Production with Dr. Veronica Wellness Revolution Podcast
One time or random paychecks:
ACTION #4 – Earn your first dollar online
Here are the simple steps you need to take BEFORE quitting your job:
ACTION #5 – Quit your job respectfully
This will depend on where you’d like to travel but for me, there was no question Chiang Mai Thailand was the answer. They have amazing fruits, good local food, beautiful weather, incredible nature, affordable apartments and the kindest people I have ever met in my life. This is THE number one spot for entrepreneurs trying to start their business from zero.
While trying to spread out my budget for as long as I could, I literally lived on $7 a day. I still went to little parks, events and ate out with friends. I also went on a cycle tour through Cambodia and Laos, visited Vietnam then came back to Chiang Mai.
The goal here is to not blow all you cash on a 2 week Euro trip type holiday so give yourself the opportunity to build income while enjoying life.
ACTION #6 – Write down a 6-8 month budget plan
Here is a breakdown of my monthly expenses in Chiang Mai, Thailand:
