I am real excited to share how I received my first $112 payout from youtube! My channel has 110,000 views and 550 subscribes. I want to share how I came to this point, how the channel started and some strategies you might want to take to grow your brand and possibly earn money on youtube.
Now if you are reading this and know nothing about my past you might think, like wow he is so lucky. However those that have known for at least two years know about 18 months ago I started this youtube channel. Although I always wanted to start a channel Angelo, my brother, was the one who posted the first video in September 2014 and said “yo! lets go, get up a video and talk some smack”. Well, thats the PG version anyway. lol.
At the time I was actually living in my car so the first few videos were edited and uploaded on my Samsung Note 3 cellphone. It wasn’t long until I crushed out a video called “One of my first videos“. The next day Nick, my best friend from Elementary School, posted his first video Sawce. We all followed a similar diet and lifestyle and the plan was to LIV our life as Plant Based New York Long Islanders spreading a positive message.
There was a point I criticized the quality of the videos my friend Nick was publishing. I used to never care but with these past few years I find it difficult to be super nice to close friends. I feel now its best to be transparent regardless as long as its true. I cant be that guy that says the hat looks good on you but tell my other friend the opposite. I rather keep it 100. At the time maybe I was just a complete ass with no buffer. I’m trying to keep that balance now a days as a recovering perfectionist but it comes down to knowing my audience and realizing that not everyone wants it straight but rather a little steamed bun cushion. BTW best steamed bun shop in Chiang Mia. Mmm
Right around December Angelo had a raw sushi binge and kind of put the channel at a stand by. I wanted to continue with him and his energy but I didn’t see as a fit for the channel. It was at this moment when I realized how difficult it was to have multiple ideas for one project. Around the same time Nick decided the videos were not for him but after four months I got him to host an upload “Healthy Snacks for the Kids.” It was fun recording in BJ’s Whole sale club and we had fun reading some 31 ingredients for one pack of fruit snacks. The editing was difficult because I had to cut the audio ever 9 seconds to avoid music copy rights issues from the music playing in the background. Now you can find free copyright music anywhere or even just ask people on Soundcloud to use their beats.
A few days before Thanksgiving I found a place to live…
At the time the channel started my brother and I become so close and our relationship really peaked to the next level. Already being in a great relationship with my sister Michelle everything felt perfect. I took my brothers decisions personal as I do with most people I love. Reminds me of the time I was riding my bicycle home from work and saw a bird in road struggling to fly. I stopped, picked it up and the whole time it was biting me as I tried to place it near a bush. I tried to save it’s life, but it kept biting me. I wonder if it even knew I was trying to saves its life…
In regards to the progress of the channel I just kept uploading trying to make two videos a week, working 30+ hours, going to school part time and exercising when I had time. I posted a few particular videos that trended well called Is too much sleep a bad thing, Ripe vs. Unripe Bananas and How to lower Cholesterol fast! When I created these videos I typically would search cholesterol on youtube, copy and paste my video in the comments and battle conversation online all night. I put together videos like this because since posting videos online in September I started to get a lot of feedback from people. I have had actual conversations around these topics multiple times. This happens when you decide to post about your life online, especially such a different point of view. As more positivity came so did negativity and my videos became more and more about proving people wrong.
One night I came home from work my brother texted me regarding a post some bodybuilder posted. Now I’m not a professional or doctor or nutritionist but I knew a few things and was a bit aggravated by the post. So I posted a video up called Debunking Bodybuilder Joe Donnelly Sugar is sugar? The video made a couple hundred views from me just rambling about a few point were I thought he was misleading. A few weeks later I saw Dr. Greger post a clip of a podcast Penn Jillette did saying he ate plant based for a few months. Although he drastically improved his health I saw it as another person trying to do a fad diet at 800 calories a day. So again, I posted a video called Penn Jillettes Weight Loss Transformation also copying and pasting the video to all social media trends until I was threatened to be block.
I continued to post other videos that were personal but had no problem riding the wave of social trending topics. Some videos included Cecil the lion , Anna Burke and Removing intestinal worms until we now reach my most popular video at over 14,000 views Rich Rolls Top ten Rules for Success. I made this video I was able to personally relate to his book “Running Ultra”. I wanted to give back something to people struggling like I have in the past. So I made this video on my $100 HP Laptop with some $20 cheap sony software. It was weird because with this post I didn’t spam it on any sites and with in a few days Rich Roll himself reposted it thanking me. It was a cool feeling knowing I could provide value to somebody who inspired me to run day after day trying to battle desires to get drunk or high. This was one of my first audio books I put on repeat for like 5 times over the course of one year.
It wasn’t until I got to Thailand I found out about google trends and posted the Machete knife fight video. Its basically a site that shows you what people are searching for on google. I also checked Youtube’s popular trending videos over seas to find this video already posted in Thailand and just chopped it up in 9 second intervals with my commentary in between. Funny thing about this video with 6,000 views is it caught 50% of its viewers in Russia and 30% in the U.S. Only down side was it was too short and most viewers only watched a few seconds so I only earned 17 cents. I made more money on my Cookies with Grandma Video at 20 cents (average per video earning).
I later realized I wanted to post another video of a guy who inspired me in different way like Rich Roll. I put together a compilation of John Josephs 10 Laws for Success. It was a trend I saw that two successful men were not really popular on youtube. They both had very little video of their story online. I thought this was a huge miss because Yotube is such a great platform for sharing your passion and ideas. I know I’m talking a lot of strategy, rambling about the past but don’t mistake that I did this all for the love journey. I love posting videos and for almost two years I made zero even now a $120 check give me a $6 a month income. What I gained from posting videos is connecting with people that think similar to me. Check out the earnings report as of April 2016. My latest big hit video was a trend of the new Kanye West Boost 350 shoes I found in Cambodia for $25. With around 3k views this style is more in line with the strategy I use now June 2016.
Current Youtube Strategy: 1. I make it authentic as possible sharing life from my perspective. 2. I put a clever title to the video using potent key words that trend on social media. 3. Then I choose a clean thumb nail photo. 4. Realizing I made short videos starting out. 5. I built a following and I make them longer now because Youtube’s 2016 algorithm is based on length to get paid. 6. I enjoy creating massive value for anybody willing to watch. 7. Most importantly I have fun and don’t worry about the money ever. Once I reached $100 Youtube allowed me to auto deposit the money directly into my banking account.
I really like making these blogs and I’m glad people care enough to watch and comment on my stories. I look back and think to myself, man, how different I am? And creating this post allows me to see that growth. You know I used to be motivated by what people thought me of me like the dropping out of school, dating the wrong girl, doing drugs, extreme diets. They judged me for this lifestyle. Now? I’m just motivated by the people that need me. peace
Updated Oct 2016: This morning I woke up to find $141 in my bank account from google. Since I originally wrote this post a few months ago i have had over 100,000 views on my channel. Check out the new screen shot of how much I am earning on my top videos: My channel now have over 300,000 views and almost 1,000 subscribers.
