For years I have been searching for success in my life only realized recently the key is to give. I used to be a pretty selfish guy not caring too much about what was around me and I never truly trusted others. I used to think well, fuck everyone else “Ima do me”, lol. The problem with my way of thinking at that time was it never allowed myself to feel completely fulfilled. The point is to give back in some way to allow a sense of purpose to emerge in this crazy world. Even now my friend Faith sometimes calls me a “taker” as a joke because I go to the weekly open mic stand up and never recite my poems. You know, I realize I am a recovering perfectionist and it’s something I am working on but since traveling South East Asia I have realized the necessity of giving back to others. This can be in any form such as giving away money, food, time, youtube videos, blogs, expertise, listening skills or just a positive attitude.
It sort of started back in Cambodia for me when I was given so much love and honesty from Khmer people and countless others around the bordering countries. Having my Cambodia family give me a place to sleep, eat and play was an experience of a lifetime. Once I cycled in Siem Reap to visit Angkol Wat, the largest religious monument in the world, I found myself giving to complete stranglers. Many people didn’t even ask me for anything but when I saw them sleeping on the streets I gave them corn, bread, pizza, steamed buns and spent time attempting to speak with them in their language.
While recently being more involved with the Digital Nomad community here in Chiang Mai and building my personal brand as a Business Coach I find myself giving away my time. My goal for me is to provide value for as many people I possibly can. Things like creating an epic success video for Rich Roll and John Joseph was just the beginning. Now without him even asking I help Johnny FD, my boss and mentor with the weekly Nomad Coffee Club meet up. It’s a group of entrepreneurs living and/or traveling Chiang Mai Thailand that basically speak for an hour around their digital income. I have given in other ways like editing a few youtube videos for my brother’s youtube channel and although I offered the first video free he insistent in paying. I have spent hours talking with people to just listen or even voice my opinions on complex or simple dilemma’s they may be having. I really enjoy helping others grow their current enterprise (themselves) or helping them see the clarity in their thinking or business. This doesn’t mean I give away hours of coaching or video / audio editing projects away for free, I do know my value and my worth. I also realize my time is becoming more and more valuable as I find more work and continue to scale my business.
Most recently I did help my friend Greg as a “Bike Model” on some stock footage for his Travel Aerial Videography business. He offered to pay me but I insistent to just help. I mean, all I really did was smile and ride back and fourth for two hours. The cool thing was that he bought me a nice avocado / tofu and hummus burrito afterwards. The even better outcome is that I made a good down to earth friend who has incredible knowledge and experience.
Now, I don’t say any of these things to make you feel bad, or claim I am a better person or even to hold a favor over their head and I certainly don’t do it for free food. I expect nothing and give everything, a concept I learned by allowing people to do this for me. I do these things to build genuine friendships that encourages others to think and say “hey, there are good people in this crazy world”.
I understand 100% that making it to the top of success mountain by myself means I failed. My mission is to help others realize their purpose and give them tools to embark on this journey we call life. I want to continue to help myself but at the same time help others grow with me. If I want to continue feeling like I am on earth for a reason, I have to keep giving that very reason. The beautiful benefit of the “Giving Strategy for Success” is when you give to the right people it always genuinely comes back ten fold and to me that is success.
